Oncology Esthetics Massage

This Oncology Esthetics Massage program addresses the clinical and hands on information that estheticians and skin care therapists have to know in order to provide safe and therapeutic facial services for people in or with a history of cancer treatment who already have or who are at risk of developing lymphedema.

Massage in the context of a facial treatment is the movement, rubbing and kneading of skin and tissue and during a traditional facial treatment starts with the cleanse and continues throughout the skin care treatment. A standard skin care service also includes traditional massage applications for the face, neck, shoulders, and décolleté, and depending on the estheticians licensed scope of practice in their state, may also include scalp, hand/arm, foot/leg, and back massage. Massage adaptations for clients with or at risk of lymphedema are required starting with the facial cleanse, and continue throughout the skin care treatment.

Lymphedema is a common side effect of cancer treatments including radiation, surgery and lymph node biopsy.  20-25% of patients diagnosed with breast cancer develop lymphedema. In addition to breast cancer, lymhedema also occurs as a result of the medical treatment of other cancers such as melanoma, colorectal, prostate, ovarian and head/neck cancer. Join us in class to learn how to cusomize your facial treatment for oncology clients.

Course prerequisite: This course is offered to licensed estheticians, massage therapists, RN and Nurse Aides, or with permission from the instructor for those who are close to completing their accredited licensing program. Spa managers also welcome to join this program.

This hybrid course includes a supervised 90-minute hands on skill assessment with an instructor and is scheduled when you register for the online home study course.
